César 2016: the nominees our favourites and our forecasts
On 27th January, Alain Tezian, President of the César Academy and Florence Foresti, unveiled the nominations for the 41st annual César Awards. Florence Foresti's performance is eagerly awaited, as everyone remembers her double act with Sean Penn at the 2009 award ceremony (see video below).
But let's focus on the nominations for now. Leading the pack are Arnaud Desplechin's My Golden Days (Trois Souvenirs De Ma Jeunesse) and Xavier Giannoli's Marguerite, nominated in 11 categories, followed by Jacques Audiard's Dheepan and Deniz Gamze Erguven's Mustang, 9 nominations each, and My King (Mon Roi), by Maiwenn, nominated in 8 categories.
Here are the lists of nominees in the main categories, along with our favourites and our predictions:
Best Film
- Dheepan
- Fatima
- The Measure of a Man (La Loi du marché)
- Marguerite
- My King (Mon Roi )
- Mustang
- La Tête haute
- My Golden Days (Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse)
At FranceInLondon, we think Mustang most deserves the award. But we predict Marguerite will find favour with the César Academy, which we expect to be won over by the cinema adaptation of this incredible true story.
Best Actor
- Jean-Pierre Bacri - La Vie très privée de monsieur Sim
- Vincent Cassel - My King (Mon Roi )
- François Damiens - Les Cowboys
- Antonythasan Jesuthasan - Dheepan
- Gérard Depardieu - Valley of Love
- Vincent Lindon - The Measure of a Man (La Loi du marché )
- Fabrice Luchini - L'Hermine
Our vote goes to François Damiens, deeply touching in the role of a father who desperately continues searching for his daughter against all the odds in Les Cowboys. But Vincent Cassel might get the award for his authentic performance with Emmanuelle Bercot in My King.
Best Actress
- Emmanuelle Bercot - My King (Mon Roi)
- Catherine Deneuve - La Tête haute
- Catherine Frot - Marguerite
- Loubna Abidar - Much Loved
- Cécile de France - Summertime (La Belle Saison )
- Soria Zeroual - Fatima
- Isabelle Hupert - Valley of Love
Making a choice is extremely hard in this category, as all these wonderful actresses' performances would fairly deserve recognition. Catherine Frot is superb in Marguerite, and we never enjoyed hearing someone massacring Mozart so much. But the César Academy might rather choose to reward Soria Zeroual for her splendid performance in Fatima.
Best Newcomer (female)
- Lou Leroy-Lecollinet - My Golden Days (Trois Souvenirs de ma jeunesse)
- Diane Rouxel - La Tête Haute
- Zita Hanrot - Fatima
- Sara Giraudeau - Les Bêtises
- Camille Cottin - Connasse, princesse des cœurs
We loved Lou Leroy-Lecollinet in My Golden Days, but Zita Hanrot might get the judging panel's votes for her sensitive and touching performance in Fatima.
Best Newcomer (male)
- Swann Arlaud - The Anarchists (Les Anarchistes)
- Quentin Dolmaire - My Golden Days (Trois Souvenirs de ma jeunesse )
- Felix Moati - All About Them (A Trois on y va)
- Finegan Oldfield - Les Cowboys
- Rod Paradot - La Tête Haute
Swann Arlaud was mind-blowing in The Anarchists, but Quentin Dolmaire will probably be the one to win for My Golden Days, the young actor's first film.
Best Supporting Actor
- Michel Fau - Marguerite
- Louis Garrel - My King (Mon Roi )
- Benoit Magimel - La Tête Haute
- André Marcon - Marguerite
- Vincent Rottiers – Dheepan
We would definitely give the award to Louis Garrel for his incredible performance in My King, but he already won the Best Newcomer award in 2006 for Les Amants réguliers. So this year the award might go to André Marcon, terrific as a desperate husband, bogged down in lies in Marguerite.
Best Supporting Actress
- Sara Forestier - La Tête haute
- Agnès Jaoui - The Sweet Escape (Comme un avion)
- Noémie Lvovsky - Summertime (La Belle saison)
- Karin Viard - 21 Nuits avec Pattie
- Sidse Babett Knudsen - L’Hermine
We give our vote to Agnès Jaoui for her first collaboration with Bruno Podalydès in The Sweet Escape. But Sidse Babett Knudsen might win the prize; she is indeed radiant as a jury member in L'Hermine.
Best Director
- Jacques Audiard - Dheepan
- Stéphane Brizé - The Measure of a Man (La Loi du Marché )
- Xavier Giannoli - Marguerite
- Maïwenn - My King (Mon Roi )
- Deniz Gamze Ergüven - Mustang
- Emmanuelle Bercot - La Tête haute
- Arnaud Desplechin - My Golden Days (Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse)
Deniz Gamze Ergüven gets our vote for Mustang, but the panel might prefer to reward Arnaud Desplechin, for My Golden Days.
Best First Film
- L'Affaire SK1 - directed by Frédéric Tellier
- Les Cowboys - directed by Thomas Bidegain
- Mustang - directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven
- Ni le ciel ni la Terre - directed by Clément Cogitore
- All Three of Us (Nous trois ou rien) - directed by Kheiron
Deniz Gamze Ergüven should definitely receive a César for Mustang. Unless the judging panel chooses to reward Kheiron, for All Three of Us?
Best Foreign Film
- Birdman - directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (United States)
- Saül Fia - directed by Laszlo Nemes (Hungary)
- Je suis mort mais j’ai des amis - directed by Guillaume Malandrin et Stéphane Malandrin (Belgium, France)
- Mia Madre - directed by Nanni Moretti (Italy, France)
- Taxi Teheran - directed by Jafar Panahi (Iran)
- Le Tout Nouveau Testament - directed by Jaco Van Dormael (Belgium, France, Luxembourg)
- Youth - directed by Paolo Sorrentino (Italy, France, Switzerland, United Kingdom)
Jafar Panahi's Taxi Teheran will probably seduce the Academy for the emotion and authenticity with wich it depicts the Iranian society. But we actually take our hats off to Birdman, and to Alejandro González Iñárritu's comeback on the big screen after four years of silence.
