Cannes 2010: One week of diamonds, designer gowns and ridiculous glamour later, and the results are finally in!
There are the Baftas, and the Oscars, and the Golden Globes, but above all these there is Cannes: the Kodak theatre never stood a chance against the backdrop of the French Riviera...
Though now in its 63rd year, the festival has lost none of its glamour. Red carpet after red carpet we watched the best of the industry stream by in a sea of jewels and gowns and finally, at the Grand Théatre Lumiere, the Ceremony itself took place.
Kristen Scott-Thomas was beautiful as ever (and flawlessly bilingual) as host for the evening; elegant and dignified she made a wonderful opening to the night. Unfortunately, Tim Burton slightly let the side down in his role as President of the Jury- In his own little world as usual, he succesfully missed every cue to introduce each category until Scott-Thomas finally had to resort to calling "Tim" accross the stage in a last attempt to snap him out of it.
Results wise, there were obvious winners such as Javier Bardem and Elio Germano sharing the Best Actor prize for their fantastic performances in Biutiful and Our Lives respectively. And, of course, there was the long awaited win for Binoche who scooped up Best Actress for Certified Copy (though some argue this should have gone to Lesley Manville for her role in Mike Leigh's Another Year...). The actress used the opportunity to pay tribute to the hunger-striking Iranian film maker Jafar Panahi, who was detained earlier in the week.
