Who is in line for a César?

By Adrienne Benassy
14/02/2013

A few days ago, Amour triumphed at the BAFTA Awards, and soon it will be the French's turn to hand out their awards. On 22 February, the 38th Edition of the César, presided by Jamel Debbouze and presented by Antoine de Caunes, will honour this year's French talents. Who is in line for a César?

Camille Redouble is ahead with 13 nominations

With 13 nominations (including Best Film, best Actress, Best Scenario and Best Director) Camille Rewinds, directed and written by Noémie Lvovsky is unexpectedly ahead in the competition. Awarded the Directors' Fortnight Prize in Cannes (2012), this is the story of a 35-years-old women who suddenly finds herself transported back to the past. Camille Redouble is expected to return home with at least one award this year.

The nominees for Camille Rewinds are as follows: Best Scenario (Noémie Lvovsky, Florence Seyvos, Maud Ameline, Pierre-Olivier Mattei), Best Director (Noémie Lvovsky) and Best Actress (Noémie Lvovsky) Awards. Two actresses (Judith Chemla and Yolande Moreau) and two more actors (Samir Guesmi et Michel Vuillermoz) have been nominated for the Best Supporting Actress and Actor Awards. Julia Faure and India Hair have been selected to compete for the Best New Comer Awards. Finally, Camille Rewinds will also be competing for the Best Soundtrack and the Best Editing.

Amour, once again amongst the favourites

According to various press predictions, Camille Redouble, with its 13 nominations and Amour, which has just won the Best Foreign Film at the BAFTAs, are battling for the Best Film.

Haneke’s anxiety-prone film, which received the Palme d'or in Cannes (2012), the Golden Globe and the BATFA Awards for the Best Foreign film, has been nominated ten times for this 38th edition of the César.

Both main characters, embodied by Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant, are in the running for the Best Actress and Best Actor Award. Isabelle Huppert has been nominated for the prize of the Best Supporting Actress Award whilst Michael Haneke has been selected in the Best Director and Best Scenario categories. Moreover, the film will be competing for the Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Setting and Best Photography.

Who are the new rising stars?

In the Best Feminine Newcomer's category, five young actresses have been designated to replace last year’s nominee, Naidra Ayadi (Polisse). The list includes two actresses of Camille Rewinds (Julia Faure et India Hair), three beginners (Izia Higelin inMauvaise Fille and Lola Dewaere in Mince alors !) and Alice Lencquesaing (Au Galop) which already has performed in various films and productions.

When it comes to masculine embryonic talents, five promising comedians are in the running to take last year’s winner Grégory Gabebois’ place. Felix Moati in Télé Gaucho, Kacey Mottet Klein in L’enfant d’en haut, Pierre Niney (Comme des frères) who had already been selected last year, Matthias Schoenaerts in De Rouille et d’os and Ernst Umhauer in In the House are also part of the happy few in the competition.

The Angel’s Share competing in the Foreign Film Category.

The Cannes Film Festival had already rewarded Ken Loach’s dramatic comedy in 2012 with the Jury Prize. Let’s hope the César will celebrate again the iconic British director’s work.

As mere bystanders with no voice in the nomination process we, the public, can only hope that amongst the nominees are titles, technicians and actors we can support. In this particular year I have no hesitation in rooting for Noemie Lvovsky not only for her current title Camille Redouble, for what her previous work both in front of and behind the camera, in particular her contributions to films made by Valerie Bruni Tedeschi (Il est facile pour une chameau ... Actrices) as well as her own previous directorial efforts.

Yolande Moreau is another excellent actress/writer/director and I will certainly be rooting for Catherine Frot.

These names - for me - embody the traditional rather than experimental filmmaking in a France that is becoming more enamored of more rebellious elements - Ozon, Noe, Honore, Cassell - but that, of course, is only one person's opinion.
