Art and Football: a Perfect Match? at Ciné Lumière in May and June
From 06/05/2016 at 18:30 to 31/05/2016 at 21:00
France will host the Euro 2016 tournament from 10 June to 10 July. With a few weeks to go before the opening game, Euro fever is on the rise. The beautiful game can get ugly, yet it has also inspired artists and creators: musicians (Elgar wrote a song for his beloved Wolverhampton, Douglas Boyd, musical director of the Philharmonie in Paris, supports Crystal palace), writers (Nick Hornby captured the fever pitch of an Arsenal fan when David Peace rallied the Red or dead cry of the Liverpool kop), filmmakers (Ken Loach went looking for Eric)… Ciné Lumière has asked some of them to come and share their passion.
- On the Road with Sócrates - Fri 6 May at 6.30pm
During the 2014 football Word Cup, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, retired Franco-German MEP (Member of European Parliament) and hero of the 1968 revolution in France goes to Brazil. Travelling some 6,000 kilometers of Brazilian roads with an old van, he follows the path set by the spirit and the ideas of famous football player and social activist, his friend Sócrates, to understand and analyse the impact of football in Brazilian society.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Daniel Cohn-Bendit (tbc).
- Hothead - Sun 29 May at 2.00pm
Patrick Dewaere is François Perrin, an anti-hero called on to save the local football team after having been outcast by the very same people of the small village of Trincamp. Winning the games procures him a new status in the community, allowing him to pave a way to revenge.
- Summer of ’92 - Tue 31 May at 6.30pm
Based on the true story of Danish football manager Richard Nielsen, and how he managed to rise his mismatched team of underdogs to compete – and even win – the 1992 European Championship Finals in Germany, Summer of '92 chronicles the Danes’ journey from rejects to champions: The Full Monty for footballers.
The screening will be introduced by Kaleem Aftab (tbc).
The season continues in June.
