Of the many influences on Truffaut, that of Sacha Guitry is most obvious in this film about serial womaniser Bertrand Morane (Denner). Like Guitry, Truffaut presents his hero explicitly as a cad, yet one whose self-awareness (he is writing a book about his conquests) and charm make him irresistible to women. Within the framing story of the hero's funeral, the film is imbued with both melancholy and a cynically comic tone.
