Mississippi Mermaid (La Sirène du Mississippi)

cast: Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Paul Belmondo

year: 1969

colour: yes

certificate: 12A

director: François Truffaut

runtime: 123

Although dedicated to Renoir, this is Truffaut's most overt tribute to Hitchcock, and another adaptation of an American série noire (Cornell Woolrich's Waltz into Darkness). The film pairs France's top glamorous stars, Deneuve and Belmondo, as the couple engaged in a sado-masochistic game of amour fou, in which love is both 'joy and pain'. Against colourful colonial and French landscapes, Deneuve is a perfect French 'Hitchcock blonde' – deadly fire burning under ice-cool exterior.
