French Primary Election Results

Valls v Hamon

Benoît Hamon and Manuel Valls have both qualified for the second round of the primary elections of the left with 36.4% and 31.1% respectively. Arnaud Montebourg who was amongst the three favourites, received less than 18% of the votes. Approximately 1.9 million people voted which is less than half the number of voters in the primaries of the right and less than the number of voters who took part in the very first primary election of 2012.
Arnaud Montebourg has now annouced that he is giving his support to Benoît Hamon and has asked for his supporters to vote for him on Sunday 29 January, during the second round of the primaries.
Manuel Valls, the ex-prime minister will need an increase in the turn out if he is to win against Hamon next weekend.
The next debate between the two candidates is at 8pm UK time on Wednesday 25 January.
