Pétanque à Londres: Tout ce que vous vouliez savoir

By Rebecca Connell
06/07/2010

You may have noticed that Franceinlondon is a little pétanque crazy, and judging by your responses to our articles on last year's Ricard tournament at the Chelsea Physic Garden, it appears that you are too. But we have been getting a fair amount of desperate letters from some of you who seem lost as to where you can indulge in your favourite passtime, uttering cries of “Where on earth can we play petanque in London? Surely it’s impossible to find a proper space in this heaving metropolis!”. But no! Fear not dear readers, if you thought you were alone in your moderately obsessive feelings about the game, you were wrong! There are heaps more just like you and me, and they have come together around our city to form groups, associations, special petanque pitches, tournaments… And I have gathered this information for your benefit (and mine), so that you never again have to sit alone, yearning after that little pétanque square in Southern France. No need to thank me, we at Franceinlondon are here for you as ever...

See you on the pitch!

London Pétanque Club: a fun group of enthusiasts who gather regularly at different spots. If your interests extend beyond the world of pétanque, then this is the club for you, as members regularly gather around London to indulge in other favoured pastimes such as cooking, karaoke, wine tasting and fine dining…

Harrow Pétanque Club: This club has been going since 1989: with around 50 members of ages ranging from near 80, down to 10, there will definitely be someone of your age there.

Croydon Pétanque Club: The Club plays on a public terrain especially built by Croydon Council and welcomes new members, from absolute beginners to international competitors. They meet regularly throughout the week at Ashbuton Park.

Epping Horizons Pétanque Club: You will find them on their terrain at Stonards Hill Recreation Ground, Epping on Monday and Saturday afternoons all year round.
Most of their playing sessions are informal, but there are three club competitions a year, played on Saturdays and two competitions played on Mondays, for which prizes are awarded. Free get-you-started tuition, so the absolute beginner can have a try!
And of course, don't forget Ricard's annual Free  Pétanque tournament! Check out the Ricard in London Facebook page for more information on their next events, and to meet fellow Pétanque and Pastis enthusiasts. It promises to be even better next year!

I am a member of Oxshott Petanque Club, situated at Oxshott Village Sports Club, near Leatherhead in Surrey. We have 16 terrains. We are a thriving club which meets every Tuesday and Saturday afternoons and Thursday evenings. We welcome visitors, we can lend them boules and show them the ropes. Please tell your readers about us.
