New Year Concert

Thursday 8 January, 7.00pm to 9.00pm

Britten Theatre (Royal College of Music), Prince Consort Road, London SW7 2BS

(Tubes: Gloucester Road; High St Kensington)

Featured in our last programme, some members have already booked their tickets for this concert which the Society is presenting along with other UK-EU Societies. However, there are still places left for what we trust will be a rousing and enjoyable start to 2009.

The Britten Theatre is part of the Royal College of Music, although it has its own entrance right next to the RCM, which is situated behind the Royal Albert Hall. One of London's best-kept secrets, the theatre was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1986 in celebration of the College's centenary. It was designed by Sir Hugh Casson and named after Benjamin Britten, a former student of the College, and audiences appreciate its simple elegance, responsive acoustics and intimate tiered auditorium.

The concert will be given by outstanding musicians including a string quartet, a solo harpist, clarinetist, pianist, harmonica/ saxophonist, and violinist. Opera singers will conclude the programme. Music will range from Haydn to Mozart to Gershwin.

Tickets are £10 or £20 and include an interval glass of wine or soft drink.

"Sur les pas des ducs de Bourgogne... et ailleurs"

An illustrated talk in French by Dr Cynthia Gamble

Tuesday 24 February

Talk from noon until 1.00pm; refreshments afterwards until 2.00pm

60 Knightsbridge, London SW1

(Opposite Harvey Nichols; Knightsbridge Tube)

University lecturer and Franco-British Society Council member Dr Cynthia Gamble, who is well known to us through her previous illuminating lectures, has kindly agreed to give a talk on Burgundy as a prelude to the FBS visit in May.

Dr Gamble, who is currently co-writing a book on Burgundy, will use her own images to present a personal insight into this historic and beautiful region. She will talk about the four great Dukes of Burgundy, their capital Dijon with its celebrated Ducal Palace in which the Musée des Beaux-Arts is installed; Cluny with the ruins of the Benedictine Abbey, originally established in 910 and hugely influential in medieval Europe; Beaune with its unique 15th century Hospice housing Roger van der Weyden's great altarpiece of the Last Judgement; the Château de Germolles, summer residence of Marguerite de Flandre, and the fine Château de Cormatin; and of course the celebrated wines of the region.

Tickets are £16 to include refreshments: sandwiches and a drink - coffee, tea, glass of wine or soft drink.

"Mariage à la francaise / English Wedded Bliss
 - A cultural/legal comparison"

Tuesday 10 March

The French Institute, 17 Queensberry Place, London SW7 2DT.

5.30pm for 5.45pm until 8.00pm

A Reception follows

The Society is joining with the Franco-British Lawyers' Society to present this special panel discussion which we hope you will find both informative and entertaining.

The panel will comprise four distinguished speakers, including Professor Malaurie who will be coming over from Paris. He will give his opening address - on marriage in France since the Revolution - in French; the re- mainder of the evening will be conducted in English. Other topics under discussion will concern French laws vis à vis succession, inheritance and the ever-changing Napoleonic code; and there will be a historic overview of queens and consorts through the ages on both sides of La Manche.

The event will be held in the comfortable and capacious cinema of the French Institute, which opens again in the new year after many months of renovation.

A reception will take place afterwards in the delightful Salon. Tickets are £10.

Dinner for those who have pre-booked will be available in the refurbished Bistrot for £25 per person including wine and coffee.

Annual General Meeting

This will be held on Wednesday 22 April at 6.30pm in the beautiful Long Drawing-Room at Dartmouth House, 37 Charles St, London W1J 5ED. After the meeting, we are delighted that Alexandra Dariescu - the 2008 winner of our Ravel music scholarship - will give a piano recital. A hot fork supper, served by Leith's the in-house caterer, will follow. Further details and a booking form will be included in the next Programme of events.

These will become due at the start of the Society's financial year on 1st February 2009. The rates will remain at:

18/03/2014 - franceholidayhome a dit :

I am a French native living in the UK. After several years of hard work in the holidays (we are teachers), my husband and I have finally completed the renovation of our holiday home in Burgundy, France and we thought fellow members of your society might be interested in renting it. At the very least it could be a topic of interest(please see our 'Burgundy Blog'. We have decided to offer £50 off the standard rates (already very reasonable) as advertised on our website to all of your French society members, and we would be very grateful if you would spread the word to them and your friends by forwarding this email and including our link on your website and in your newsletter:

We would also consider holiday home swaps.

Please don't hesitate to get back in touch should you require further details.

Bien cordialement

Marielle Steward
