The sun rises over Vienna, where Victor and Annette live with their six-year-old daughter Pamela, close by Annette's extended family. The couple are undoubtedly in love, but theirs is a tempestuous relationship, the drama fuelled by Victor's drinking and drug taking, which do nothing to help his thwarted literary ambitions. They move to Paris, but Annette's hope that he'll clean up are dashed when he starts an affair with another addict. Annette takes Pamela and disappears. Eleven years later, Pamela discovers that her father is living nearby, and the two begin a tentative reconciliation.
