Adèle H was the poet Victor Hugo's younger daughter, and this highly romantic costume film, based on Adèle Hugo's own diary, is the story of her obsessional – and mostly unrequited – love for a British officer, Lieutenant Pinson. The stunningly beautiful young Isabelle Adjani finds here one of the defining roles of her career, portraying Hugo's daughter's tormented descent into madness as she follows Pinson to Nova Scotia (shot in Guernsey), the image of transcendental passion.
